Several years ago, the GAZ company extended the term of the patent rights to the Pobeda brand. This provoked many rumors that the Soviet car would soon return to the Russian market. Renders of the future "Victory" appeared on the Web almost immediately. But each time the car was presented in the form of a sedan or a sports car. However, the return of "Victory" in this form is unlikely.
The fact is that the modern market forces manufacturers to abandon cars of this class. In particular, the more recently popular Ford Mondeo remained only in the United States and China, leaving other countries. Therefore, if GAZ really decides to return Pobeda cars to the market, they will represent the SUV segment. This is probably what the independent designer thought when he published a series of render images. On them, he showed how the GAZ M20 Pobeda 2021-2022 might look if it returned to the market in the form of a premium SUV.
The choice in favor of such a car is quite understandable. First of all, cars of this class have always been quite popular in Russia. In addition, they are produced in limited quantities, which, taking into account the capacity utilization of the Gorky Automobile Plant, is beneficial for the enterprise. In addition, Volkswagen, which is likely to help GAZ develop the Pobeda SUV, does not have such vehicles. Bentley Bentayga is built on the basis of VW, but the British model is too expensive. SUV "Pobeda" with a high degree of probability will be offered at a more affordable price.
As for the technical part, it will be borrowed from Volkswagen. The choice will most likely fall on the Touareg, which today is equipped with powerful enough engines capable of providing good dynamics to such a large car as the presented "Pobeda". At the same time, the price of the Russian and German models may be comparable to each other. The GAZ company will not make the "Pobeda" SUV more expensive.
The latter can be explained by the fact that the car in this case will not be sold. SUV "Pobeda" will be a completely new car, which will cause concern for most buyers. That is, by purchasing such a car, each person will face a high risk of unexpected breakdown. But if Pobeda turns out to be significantly cheaper than its direct competitor - Mercedes-Maybach GLS, then it will be able to attract attention.
Design
The presented GAZ 20 Pobeda 2021-2022 is designed in a classic style for modern premium SUVs. The car has a large body, characterized by a square outline. At the same time, the front struts are heavily piled back, which is more typical for crossovers. Also, the body of the new "Victory" is painted in 2 colors with a contrasting roof. Similar solutions are found in premium SUVs, including the recently debuted Tank 500.
Despite the foregoing, the Pobeda SUV is visually more reminiscent of the Mercedes-Maybach. The Russian novelty has received a fairly large hood with a relief surface, because of which the car looks larger in front. This is facilitated by the presence of large headlights. They are made in the shape of a trapezoid. And inside the head optics there is something that looks like a spotlight with many small LEDs. This design decision is not found on modern cars.
Interestingly, thanks to the radiator grille, the new "Pobeda" partly resembles the Toyota Land Cruiser 300. It stands out from the Russian model for its massiveness. Having the shape of a rectangle with a rounded top edge, the radiator grille is "filled" with three wide metal strips, spaced apart at a great distance. Judging by the renders, the developer placed LED strips on these lamellas, which is also uncharacteristic for modern cars.
Below, under the head optics at the "Victory" there are teardrop-shaped lamps that act as daytime running lights or "fog lights". The front bumper almost completely covers the long air intake with a metal mesh. It is divided into 3 segments due to the chrome insert. Interestingly, the plastic body kit that goes from the front bumper and stretches along the side of the body is decorated in the same color. This detail gives the car more style.
The wheel arches of the GAZ M20 Pobeda 2021-2022 differ in square shapes, which is also typical for the latest Land Cruiser 300. The ground clearance of the presented model is unknown. But it will probably exceed 200mm. This is evidenced by the fact that the Russian novelty is equipped with rims with a diameter of 20-22 inches.
At the stern of the new "Victory" there is a developed spoiler, which in this case rather serves as a decorative function. The rear optics of the presented model turned out to be very narrow. And the stern bumper is complemented by a "toothy" protective body kit, which seems to have been borrowed from a "charged" crossover. It has 4 tailpipes built into it. This indirectly indicates that the presented "Victory" will indeed be based on the Volkswagen Touareg.
Specifications
The choice in favor of the German model as a prototype for the Pobeda SUV can be explained by the fact that the platform on which the Touareg is based is intended to create different types of cars. And this "cart" is designed for large machines.
Therefore, the new SUV GAZ 20 "Pobeda" 2021-2022 can by default get a turbocharged engine with a volume of 2 liters, which produces up to 249 hp. However, the recoil from this unit may not be enough to provide the necessary acceleration dynamics. In this regard, it is more likely that the Russian SUV will be equipped with a 3-liter turbodiesel of the same power, the maximum torque of which reaches 600 N * m. In addition, a turbocharged gasoline engine with a volume of 3 liters can also be reserved for Pobeda. This engine produces up to 340 hp. power.
An 8-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission and four-wheel drive with a lockable center differential are supplied by default with each of these engines. From the Touareg to the new "Pobeda", an adaptive suspension, capable of changing the size of the ground clearance, should also go.
Time to market
GAZ does not give any comments on the purpose for which the rights to the Pobeda brand were extended. At the same time, we can say with confidence that the presented SUV, at least in the near future, will not enter the Russian market. GAZ said earlier that it does not plan to change its development strategy yet and will continue to produce only commercial vehicles.
