German automaker BMW is working on a G30 successor to the current 5-Series. The new car will be released in mid-2023 and will be radically different from the current car, both in technical and design terms.
Actual model
The upcoming new product will be implemented in line with BMW's electrification strategy. In technical terms, the automaker plans to make the new "five" exactly like the X3 and X4 crossovers, offering a choice of modifications with traditional internal combustion engines, hybrids, and also all-electric ones. The latter will appear by the end of 2030. By the time the new 5 Series goes on sale in 2023, the BMW Group will be offering 12 all-electric vehicles worldwide, including electric versions of the X1, 7-Series and 3-Series.
Renders of the hybrid BMW 5-Series
The next 5 Series will have a more progressive design, but the traditional grille “nostrils” will remain more or less recognizable, unlike the recently released M4 (photo: autocar.co.uk). It is also known that the novelty will be built on a deeply modernized CLAR platform, on which the entire BMW model range is now based, except for the i3.

Due to the flexibility of the platform, it allows you to create cars not only on traditional gasoline and diesel engines, but also hybrids with any type of drive. It will be used as part of the strategy to diversify the product portfolio in anticipation of the transition to all modes of transport. The new 5-Series will receive the G60 index and will retain the current turbocharged four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, as well as an expanded array of plug-in hybrid systems targeting a 2.0-liter or 3.0-liter petrol engine.

Less optimistic is the future of the sporty M550i xDrive with a V8 engine, which is likely to fall under the onslaught of Euro-7 environmental standards, which will just take effect when the new "five" is released. Most likely, it will be replaced by a hybrid 545e PHEV. It will be powered by a two-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, as well as an electric motor with a total capacity of 388 hp. Thus, we can also assume that we will have a hybrid M5, which, like the M550i, will become plug-in.
