Motional has unveiled a new robotic taxi based on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover. The model will hit the public roads in 2023.
The main feature of the robotic taxi is that it supports the fourth level autonomous driving technology. That is, the car can drive on the roads without the participation of the driver. In this case, a person must sit behind the wheel of such a crossover, since it will perform some functions that are not available for the built-in electronics.
To implement this technology, engineers have built 30 sensors, cameras, radars and lidar into the Korean model. Also, the crossover was supplemented with external devices that signal to other vehicles that an autonomous car is driving along the road. It is reported that the on-board electronics of the robo-taxi operates under the control of self-learning artificial intelligence, which will eventually expand the scope of the car.
In addition, in the cabin of the presented novelty, several solutions are implemented that are designed to simplify the interaction of the driver with the electric crossover. In particular, through the built-in equipment, it will be able to request an extended rest stop. In addition, the on-board electronics can be controlled remotely. This will be useful, for example, when the car is in a difficult situation. In such cases, the operator will be able to remotely transfer the crossover to more "comfortable" conditions for him.
It is reported that the robo-taxi was created with the direct participation of Hyundai. Thanks to this collaboration, Motional will be able to reduce the cost of producing autonomous vehicles.
