Infiniti was the first manufacturer to offer coupe-like crossovers to the global market. But despite the fact that such cars are in high demand today, the Japanese concern "dropped out" from this segment for several years. The new QX55 should help Infiniti return to the coupe crossover market. However, as it turned out, the Japanese model is able to attract the attention of buyers only with its appearance and comfortable interior.
Infiniti QX55 differs from QX50 only in redesigned body design and increased body rigidity by 10%. The novelty is equipped with a 2-liter supercharged engine developing up to 268 hp. power. This motor is combined with a plug-in all-wheel drive and variator. The base unit has long been used on Infiniti models and has established itself as a responsive and fast enough engine. The same can be said for the continuously variable variator. At the same time, the Infiniti QX55, unlike its direct competitors, never allows the driver to take full control of the car.
The Japanese novelty is characterized by a smooth ride and excellent sound insulation, due to which there is rarely a feeling of discomfort in the crossover cab. On the other hand, when maneuvering, the body of the Infiniti QX55 rolls noticeably. Understeer is also felt, and the AWD does not provide any feedback. Basically, it is designed to improve wheel grip on slippery roads.
The pluses of the Japanese novelty include the high seating position of the driver, which provides good visibility, a lot of free space in the cabin and well-damped front seats. Compared to direct competitors such as the BMW X4, the Infiniti QX55 has a large luggage compartment. In addition, the Japanese novelty has a more powerful base motor. But, for example, the top-end BMW X4 is equipped with an engine that turns the Bavarian model into a full-fledged sports car. The Infiniti QX55 lacks these features.
In general, the Japanese novelty, at a price comparable to the German models, is noticeably inferior to them in terms of control quality. The Infiniti QX55 is designed for those who like comfortable and slow driving in a straight line. For other conditions, it is better to buy a German cross-coupe.
