BMW announced a few months ago that it plans to release the X5 hydrogen crossover. Note that a limited number of companies manufacture fuel cell vehicles today. Only Toyota and Hyundai are well-known. But, as it turned out, Jaguar Land Rover will soon join them. The British concern has announced that it intends to bring the hydrogen Defender to the market (photo: media.landrover.com).

Testing of a prototype fuel cell SUV will begin later in 2021. The development of such a Defender will be carried out with the support of the British government. JLR stressed that while the hydrogen SUV is being considered as a concept. That is, the British manufacturer thus reserves the opportunity to abandon the development of such a car. At the same time, JLR emphasizes that, according to their forecasts, by the beginning of the next decade, about 10 million cars with engines powered by hydrogen fuel will appear on world roads.

The British concern has published preliminary sketches of a new engine that will be tested on the Defender. However, the manufacturer does not announce any specific characteristics of this unit.

The introduction of the fuel cell Defender fits well with JLR's previously announced plans to become a zero-emission concern. The British manufacturer intends to achieve this title by 2039. JLR is already working on creating a new platform to which it will transfer at least part of the lineup. This architecture is designed primarily for hybrid or electric vehicles.
