The Jaguar Land Rover concern last year brought to the world market a new generation Defender, which is built on the same platform as the Discovery. The choice in favor of such a "cart" for the development of the first SUV turned out to be not the best for the manufacturer. The fact is that Defender proved to be so popular that Discovery sales plummeted. Ultimately, this forced JLR to rethink its plans for a second SUV.

Moreover, in the near future, Discovery expects another "blow" from the Defender. In about 1-1.5 years, a second long-wheelbase SUV will hit the market and is expected to allow 3 rows of seats in the cabin.

Representatives of the British concern said that during the next generational change, Discovery will move to the EMA platform, created specifically for electric cars. But this does not mean that the SUV will lose its internal combustion engines. According to the official statement, this platform supports the ability to implement different types of hybrid installations. That is, the next generation Discovery will retain its 4-cylinder engines.

Meanwhile, Defender will continue to develop on the old MLA platform. This "bogie" allows the production of various types of SUVs, including all-electric and versions with a longitudinally located internal combustion engine, providing for the orientation of the crankshaft along the axis of the vehicle. Also, the future Defender will receive a number of hybrid power plants.

Officially, the timing of the release of the new generation SUV has not been announced. But the EMA platform for the future Discovery is expected to debut in the spring of 2024, when Jaguar Land Rover publishes its next financial report.
