Nissan may launch a compact, low-cost pickup to compete with the Ford Maverick

During 2021, Hyundai and Ford introduced the Santa Cruz and Maverick, respectively. These are 2 inexpensive pickup trucks, each of which is compact in size. Despite the fact that the first model entered the market only a few weeks ago, and the second will go on sale only in the beginning of autumn, they have already shown that they will be very popular. To date, several tens of thousands of pre-orders have been collected for them.

D21 Series Pickups

Apparently, such a high popularity of compact pickups forced Nissan to return to the idea of producing such a car. Back in the 1950s, the then Datsun company supplied the small D21 series trucks to the American market. But in 1997, these cars disappeared from car dealerships as Nissan launched the Frontier sales.

However, sources close to the Japanese company claim that its management intends to launch production of a new compact pickup. Moreover, unlike Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick, the model will immediately be electric. Nissan representatives, when asked about this, did not provide any specific information about the future of the compact pickup.

However, the appearance of such a car in the lineup of the Japanese brand is quite justified. The fact is that only 2 of the mentioned compact-size pickups are presented on the American market today. But they are equipped exclusively with internal combustion engines. There are no compact electric pickups in the US. On the local market, sales of the Ford F-150 Lightning and a number of similar cars have only recently started, which are larger than the planned Nissan model.
