Five years after the first version of the Niro hit the market, Kia has begun developing the next generation of the crossover. Despite the fact that there is a lot of time left before the debut of the model, many details about it are already known.

So, according to British media, the Korean model will keep the same platform. At the same time, Kia engineers will make major changes to it, the nature of which has not yet been disclosed. Also, the manufacturer will keep the same engine range for the crossover. That is, the novelty will receive a 203-horsepower electric motor located on the front axle and developing up to 395 N * m of torque. A battery with a capacity of 64 kWh is supplied with it. At the same time, it is expected that the range of the electric version of the Niro will exceed 483 kilometers.
Prototype of a new generation of cross
The hybrid crossover will be based on the same 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that is paired with a compact electric motor and small battery. According to rumors, the recoil from this unit will be less than that of the Sorento PHEV.
It is known that as part of the generation change, Kia will make major changes to the Niro's body and interior. Recent photos of the test prototype show that the Korean model will receive a front bumper with an enlarged center air intake, a plastic body kit and redesigned LED lighting (photo: carscoops.com). Moreover, the taillights will be placed higher than that of the current Niro.
The interior of the crossover will be decorated in the style of the latest Sportage. In particular, the new Niro will be equipped with a dual digital instrument panel and a touchscreen monitor with a diagonal of up to 12 inches. According to preliminary information, Kia will improve the quality of finishing materials and install a two-spoke steering wheel. The presentation of the second generation Niro should take place before the end of this year.
